HTC to hold 'major news announcement,' may settle with Apple

updated 05:35 pm EDT, Wed August 10, 2011

HTC plansm major news event August 11

HTC late Wednesday said it would hold a "major news announcement" on Thursday morning. The company wouldn't say what was involved but would have CEO Peter Chou speaking during a conference call live from LA. No other direction was given.

Such sudden announcements are never reserved for product announcements and suggest that the news is relating to a corporate-level issue.

A possibility exists that it might have reached a settlement with Apple. HTC has signaled a willingness to make a deal with Apple following its loss in an ITC patent dispute and was facing a possible repeating with the start of a second investigation. Buyouts of S3 and Dashwire, which many believe were for patents, may not have given HTC any safeguards.

A small chance exists of a takeover, such as by Microsoft. The Windows Phone developer has been eager to buy market share and made its deal with Nokia for the same reason. HTC's relatively large size, however, as well as antitrust concerns might keep Microsoft from risking such a deal.

    What is it about?

I don't think they are going to announce a new product since apple has not came out with any new product. So what are they going to copy?

Anyone who roots for HTC better pray that this is not about announcing a Microsoft takeover.

    It's about

A new HTC iOS clone. Then they will spend 30 min showing a prototype while bragging how innovative they are, and Apple is already passé.

MS is already in bed with Nokia, I think it is more Apple related. If anyone needs to buy a handset maker it is Google, so as to have complete control over their ever increasing product line up.

    Crazy Idea

    Maybe Apple is buying HTC.
Maybe a 'willingness to make a deal' grew over time and now they're selling the whole company. Shareholders wold gain. The CEO would get a nice settlement, and Apple would get manufacturing capability.
