Comes with selection of high-quality papers

Epson today added to its lineup of professional-level inkjet printers with the introduction of the Stylus Pro 3880 "Signature Worthy" Edition, a 17-inch printer featuring extra-wide color gamuts with nine of Epson's own UltraChrome K3 inks for more vivid magenta tones as well as deeper hutes of blue and violet. The special edition also comes with six letter-sized packs of a matching line of "Signature Worthy" papers.

The paper packs include Exhibition Fiber, Cold Press Bright, Cold Press Natural, Hot Press Bright and Hot Press Natural papers, along with a sampler pack of other photo and fine art-grade papers. The printer features an advanced B&W Photo mode as well as auto-switching Matte and Photo black inks depending on the paper used.

The company says the combination of advances MicroPiezo AMC print heads and AccuPhoto HD2 image technology makes for superior prints with accurate dot placement, smoother color detail and excellent highlight and shadow detail for either color or monochrome images. The printer can handle papers up to 17 by 22 inches.

The Epson Stylus Pro 3880 "Signature Worthy" Edition is now available at select resellers retailing at $1,495. It includes a one-year Preferred Limited Warranty that includes telephone support and next-business-day service, with optional extended warranties available.

This stinks. A new "edition" simply because it comes with some new papers?

How about a 3900 with a street price of around US$700 with two sets of inks?

I have the 2005 4800, which makes near-perfect prints after I spend at least half an hour--and sometimes up to two hours--getting the heads unclogged.

Getting prints done at MpixPro and Mpix is more efficient for me, but I'd probably get a newer photo printer if the price were right.
