Revised design overcomes sloppy fit

iFixit has introduced a revamped optical bay hard drive enclosure for unibody MacBooks and MacBook Pros. The new design serves the same basic purpose as its predecessor, replacing the optical drive with a drive enclosure for storage expansion, however the team has reengineered the mounting points for a tighter fit.

The previous version reportedly lacked flanges for a secure mount at the front of the unibody case, resulting in a slightly loose fit. The redesign integrates additional flanges for rigidity, along with several more screws.

The enclosure enables users to install a second 2.5-inch notebook drive up to 9.5mm thick and connected via SATA interface.

The drive enclosures are now available directly from iFixit for $60.
