Sony contradicts earlier rumors
Sony has finally released a list of specs for the upcoming PlayStation Vita handheld, confirming that the device will integrate 512MB of RAM. The specs contradict earlier rumors suggesting the device would only provide 256MB of RAM, though the inaccurate reports focused on comments from an executive from a game studio, Novarama, rather than Sony itself.
Aside from the system RAM, the specs list also confirms that the Vita's graphics processor will be able to take advantage of 128MB of dedicated VRAM. The device will also support 120 frames-per-second video recording from its rear-facing camera in 320x240 resolution, or 60 fps in full VGA resolution.
The company promises to support MP3, AAC and WAV audio files, along with MPEG-4 videos encoded using several different H.264 profiles.
Although Sony originally expected the Vita to arrive on store shelves in time for the holidays, an executive recently claimed only Japanese customers will be able to buy the handheld before the end of the year. The North American launch has been pushed back to early 2012. [via CNET]
