Sony digital binoculars with video inbound
Sony has launched the ‘world’s first’ digital binoculars that also shoots video in 1080p. The company has released two models, the DEV-3 and the DEV-5, which use the AVCHD 2.0 format to record footage in both 2D and 3D. Unlike traditional binoculars, the DEV-3 and DEV-5 use electronic autofocus to keep moving objects in focus at all times.
The cameras capture separate images for left and right eyes using a pair of precision G Lens optics (dual f/1.8-3.4, 0.5-10x optical zoom) and which capture images using a pair of Exmor R CMOS sensors and Sony’s BIONZ processors. Each viewfinder sports a 1,227 dot resolution.
Both binoculars support Memory Stick Pro and SDXC cards. A pair of stereo microphones captures audio. They also include an HDMI port for outputting recordings directly to a connected HD TV.
To this, the range-topping DEV-5 adds 10x digital zoom, GPS and accessories that include a carrying case and neck strap.
The DEV-3 will retail for $1,399, while the DEV-5 will retail for $1,999. Both are due in North America by November.
