Apple preparing to announce 'absolutely different' Mac?

Could take on new model name

Apple is planning on announcing a new Mac, one which should be "absolutely different from current products," a source with an Asian supplier tells Macotakara. The hardware is said to to be distinct enough that the product line may have a new name. Any other details of the hardware remain a secret, however.

Recent rumors have pointed to Apple testing thinner MacBooks outside of the MacBook Air range. There have also been recurring suggestions that Apple is testing Airs based on ARM processors, although the Air line was just updated to use mobile Core i5 and i7 processors. For Apple such a move might be a step towards bridging iOS and OS X, although the plan would require major changes to hardware and software design.

    An answer to the...

Apple has run out of ideas boys (showing their own lack of imagination).

As I've written before, the BIGGEST fear Apple's competitors have is that they will come up with something newer, or better, or very different, than what currently exists AND that it will catch on. As a businessman, WE think this way all the time about our competitors, so will the anti-Apple CEOs. And they have a right to "fear" because NONE of their products make a true difference... no innovation, just copy and HOPE. The reliance is on MS, a company totally devoid of imagination.

Now that HP is "bailing," the chickens are running around with their heads cut off. Repeatedly the "geek" columns write about "competition is good for Apple, and us" without noting that Apple basically competes against itself!!! They have NO desire to copy what the other mindless robots do. Really, they never have. It finally paid off.

    Mini Tower?

Hope it's a cross between the Mini and the Pro... with something like 1 or 2 PCI-X slots

    Think Bigger

A Mini Tower or rack mountable Pro or anything like that is not "different from the current products". IF this rumour is true (and that's a huge IF), it would be something different. Apple's successes in the last decade have been when they went in an unexpected direction and took over a new category. They revolutionized Music Players. they revolutionized Smart Phones. They revolutionized Tablets.

So how about this: imagine a 27" iMac laying flat on the table running iOS and a touch screen.
    or
A 7" touch screen device (running either Lion or OS-X) with a projector built in. The small touch panel is used for keyboarding, mousing etc and the wall is used for the screen.
    or
A 27" TV with a AppleTV built in. You'd have a regular remote plus a wireless keyboard. Most of the time it would work like a normal TV. Hit a button on the remote and it's an Apple TV with access to online content. Hit another button and it's a Mac. Perfect for people with small spaces, dorms, etc. where multiple big screens won't work.

    At Long Last

The Apple Orb. Spherical in shape and completely wireless, the i-Orb uses thought-touch-sensation control to anticipate owner 'gestures' as they originate. Marketed with the tagline "You don't have to talk, I know it all," will be licensed at Lululemon, Tiffany, and Apple Stores worldwide.

Yes, thinking neck pain. Thinking muscle pain. Thinking "sounds like the microsoft table thing". Thinking a bad idea (not sure how an iMac lying flat running a touchscreen is better than an iMac standing up running a touch screen. Same issues).

A 7" touch screen device (running either Lion or OS-X) with a projector built in. The small touch panel is used for keyboarding, mousing etc and the wall is used for the screen.

Nope. Projector means bulk. Apple doesn't do bulk. Plus few people need projectors (which also are expensive!). Too niche, even for Apple.

A 27" TV with a AppleTV built in. You'd have a regular remote plus a wireless keyboard. Most of the time it would work like a normal TV. 27" TV? Who does 27" TVs? And a 'regular' remote. Is that a regular 'apple' remote or a real remote?

And Apple doesn't do TV, since they would need to add in a tuner. It gets them nothing (and people will complain there's no DVR or cablecard slot). Apple also would say that you don't want a TV since TV is dull. You just want content. So forget the 'regular TV' part. At best it would be an Apple TV with built-in monitor.

And that wouldn't sell in colleges, since something like that, they'd want to play their own videos, not just videos that the AppleTV can play (say, AVIs).

    Or...

It could be the rumored TV product, which could essentially be a very large (27"-50") iPad-like device running iOS. Kinda like a big monitor with AppleTV (and the ability to play games) built in.

This could thought of as a similar product category as Google's fledgling GoogleTV product- married to hardware- only better.

Wasn't everyone's biggest hope for the previous iteration of the AppleTV- the ability to play the same games as the iPad and iPhone/iPad Touch? This coupled with the fact that Apple is now a legitimate competitor in the casual-game space could mean trouble for traditional console makers (Sony/Microsoft)

This is just mating a hi-res display with an equally powerful graphics card and an Apple TV engine... This would be an ideal computer/monitor/TV/game system. Using an iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch would also give it an ideal controller.

    Just speculating...
