Radiant Opto-Electronics becomes major supplier

A supply chain leak has revealed that Taiwan-based Radiant Opto-Electronics has become the major supplier of backlight units for its forthcoming iPad 3. Apple has appointed LG Display, Samsung and Sharp to supply the rumored high-resolution LCD panels for its next-gen iPad, with LG producing the majority of the display units. All three companies are getting their backlight components from Radiant, either for all or most of their LCD panels, giving the company a major role in the next iPad.

The same Digitimes sources also reveal that behind LG, Samsung is the number two LCD panel supplier for the iPad 3. While Sharp is currently third in line, based on the current number of orders placed by Apple, industry sources suggest that it could overtake Samsung if it is able to produce a stable yield of panels that meet Apple’s stringent quality standards.
