updated 01:40 pm EDT, Fri August 26, 2011

Display opportunites hampered by lack of OpenGL

MacNN has reviewed the Kanex mLinq, a USB-to-HDMI adapter for Macs. The accessory is used to connect a compatible HDMI monitor or TV to a Mac, whether as a primary or secondary display. It in fact allows some older Intel Macs to output both audio and video over HDMI.

The adapter is said to allow bolting on large amounts of screen space, and should provide "solid" HD video playback. It does however have some drawbacks, the most important being a lack of support for OpenGL, severely limiting gaming and other 3D rendering support. Kanex is selling the mLinq for $99.
