Google TV going overseas, with UK launch due

The software meant for living rooms known as Google TV is due to arrive in the UK within the next six months, according to The Telegraph. The official announcement is expected to come at the Edinburgh Television Festival that kicks off on Friday. Google's executive chairman, Eric Schmidt, is expected to break the news at the show.

Google TV requires compatible set-top boxes, but will likely have access to BBC's iPlayer and ITV's Player and access programs and content offered by either as well. Other than watching TV content, Google TV will allow users to browse the web as well. Apps for smartphones will turn them into remotes, and users will have the option of voice-guided search, YouTube HD, and third-party apps. The timing will give it the Android 3.1 remake or beyond and provide both Android Market as well as a new interface.

Previously, international expansion plans for Google TV were looking bleak, as its reception in the US has been lukewarm. Google may be counting on fewer video website blocks from TV networks as well as sheer scale to counteract its image.
