Harman refreshes headphones lineup for iPhones, others

updated 07:00 pm EDT, Fri August 26, 2011

Offers in-ear, ear bud or ear-hook designs

Of the five new models added to Harman's AKG K300 series of lightweight headphones intended for smartphones and other mobile devices, four of them feature iPhone-compatible in-line microphones so users can place or receive calls as well as control volume, play/pause and skip using the buttons on the cord. The models all feature above-average frequency and sensitivity response while keeping prices at the low end of the headphone spectrum.

The least expensive set is the AKG 311 ear buds ($20), now with improved bass response but lacking the microphone and volume control of the other models. The unit comes in two color options (arctic blue or arctic black) with a semi-open design that offers 125dB SPL/V sensitivity and an 18Hz-20.5kHz frequency response.

The $40 AKG K318 ear buds improve on the 311 model with wider frequency (16Hz-21kHz) and sensitivity (127dB) response, 15mm drivers and the included microphone and volume control. It also includes a carrying pouch and is only available in black.

The AKG 326 model ($60) is dubbed a "high performance sports headset" and features an ear-hook design for workouts. It includes the in-line mic and volume controls and sports a 126dB sensitivity and 17Hz-23kHz frequency range. It's available in black and red and includes a carrying pouch.

The remaining two models are in-ear headsets intended to provide sound isolation for users. The AKG K328 ($60) is available in a vibrant red or purple color with a closed-back design and the included in-line mic and volume. It comes with three sizes of silicon sleeves for a comfortable fit and offers a 13Hz-22.5kHz frequency range and 121dB sensitivity.

The top of the line is the $80 AKG K350, which mirrors the K328 in many respects but improves the frequency range to 12Hz-23.5kHz for even better bass, and is available in white, chrome, arctic blue and arctic muave. It also features a closed-back design, in-line mic and volume control, three silicon sleeve sizes and a 121dB sensitivity rating.
