comScore: Android hit 42% in July, still not stopping iPhone

comScore July 2011 keeps Apple, Google still up

Android and the iPhone are still the only two smartphone platforms growing in the US, comScore found Tuesday. In July, Google's OS was up to a new high of 41.8 percent share in the US. Apple was nonetheless still growing and moved up exactly one point to 27 percent.

Every other smartphone platform was on the decline. RIM was still declining compared to the spring and saw the BlackBerry down to 21.7 percent. Windows Phone and Mobile combined were virtually flat from earlier this year at 5.7, down a point from a year ago. Symbian was also down to 1.9 percent, while webOS was small enough to stay out of the top five.

Among individaul cellphone designers, regardless of the type, most were struggling. Samsung's Android edge through phones like the Droid Charge helped it gain slightly to hit 25.5 percent. All of that was at the expense of non-iPhone platforms: Apple was up 1.2 points to 9.5 percent, but Motorola was down to 14.1 percent and RIM down to 7.6 percent. LG was exactly flat at 20.9 percent as its new smartphones only just offset dropping basic phones.

Combined, Apple and Google now have almost 69 percent of the entire smartphone space in the US and have further reinforced the perception of a now established duopoly. The figures also further refute some beliefs that Google is winning at Apple's expense as it's only taking share from already struggling platforms.

Share could change significantly in the fall. Motorola, Samsung, and others have major Android releases like the Droid Bionic and upgraded Galaxy S II, but Verizon and Sprint have also never seen major iPhone launch events.
