Java maker Gosling exits Google amid Oracle Android lawsuit

updated 05:50 pm EDT, Tue August 30, 2011

James Gosling out from Google after a few months

Java's key pioneer, James Gosling, posted a surprise on Tuesday that he had already left Google. Having just signed on in March, he was leaving to join Liquid Robotics, a company making underwater robots that scour data and upload it online through a cellular or satellite link. Gosling stressed that the abrupt exit was due to his interest in the project and not the looming dangers of the Oracle lawsuit over Java in Android.

"I had a great time at Google, met lots of interesting people, but I met some folks outside doing something completely outrageous, and after much anguish decided to leave Google," he said.

His work at Liquid Robotics would be to craft software for automatic navigation as well as processing the data into a usable form. It was worth pursuing as it was a "rocket science problem" that would help everyone, he said.

The departure might still require Gosling to testify in the case, where Oracle claims that Google copied Java code to use in Android's just-in-time engine that forms the core of its OS. Some of the code dates back to the Sun era and possibly the time Gosling was still employed there. The code pioneer would still be avoiding the potential fallout should Google lose or be forced into a tough settlement. [via InfoWorld]

    Great Pioneer

James Gosling is a great computing pioneer of this era. Great to see he decided against continuing his employment in the advertising industry and returned to the computing industry where his insight will be best benefitted from.

Gosling is right to leave Google, thieves of private information and IP, who sell privacy for ads.
