Promises more units by end of October
HP will be ramping up its manufacturing for a limited production run of its TouchPad tablets. The company revealed through its The Next Bench blog that it will be producing an unspecified number of new units. HP gave no firm indication on delivery, other than to say it will be at least few weeks, and will occur during the current fiscal quarter, which ends October 31.
HP caught the industry off guard when it suddenly announced earlier this month it was exiting the smartphone and tablet market, and was stopping all development on its webOS software. The company, and its partners, then dropped the price of the tablet to as low as $99, creating a buying frenzy. Inventories were depleted in a matter of hours.
HP said that it would try to limit quantities available to individual purchasers in an effort to prevent hoarding and profiteering. HP also indicated it would try to fulfill orders already successfully placed through its HP Home & Home Office and HP Small & Medium Business online stores that had not already been shipped.
