Google brings back offline access for Apps

Google has begun rolling out a new Chrome browser app that brings offline access to several Google Apps. The update, detailed online, will go live over the next week, and allows users to view their inbox even when they lose their Internet connection. The Gmail Offline Chrome Web Store app is now available.

The HTML5-powered app bears a striking resemblance to the Gmail web app for tablets because it is based on it. Users can enter offline mode by clicking the new Gmail Offline icon on Chrome's 'new tab' page.

Google Calendar and Google Docs will imperceptibly transition between on- and offline modes. The former's offline mode allows for viewing events and RSVPing to appointments. The latter allows for viewing documents but editing isn't yet ready, though it is coming.

Last time Google Docs were available offline, the Google Gears development was still ongoing.
