Rutgers makes iPad 2 core part of some management courses

Adds augmented reality to learning experience

Rutgers University has made the iPad 2 an integral part of its Digital Mini-MBA program. The school's Center for Management Development (CMD) will be providing an iPad 2 as part of an upcoming four-day executive program it will be offering in September. The tablet will be preloaded with all instructional material as well as several augmented reality apps.

Rutgers began interleaving the iPad as a teaching medium into its curriculum last year. More recently, it has incorporated augmented reality apps Layar, Regus, and WorkSnug, collaboration apps Evernote and WebEx, location apps Foursquare and Yelp, and the code reading app Qrafter QR as teaching tools.

"Having spent the past year optimizing the iPad to replace printed binders and to enhance collaboration among participants," said Eric Greenberg, Rutgers' Director of Marketing Programs, CMD, "we are now moving into the more exciting areas of augmented reality and virtual worlds."

Using the iPad 2, class participants can view the instructor's materials, participate in polling, evaluate the curriculum, and communicate with other program participants. The instructors get feedback immediately as they incorporate these platforms, tools and apps into the curriculum.

iPads are getting an increasing stake in the classroom but are more often used solely as replacements for textbooks, such as through the Kno app. Rutgers' move takes advantage of things that only the tablet could do rather than simply substituting for paper.
