Red Epic X with 5K resolution ships in quantities

Red has announced that it is now shipping its latest and ‘most sophisticated’ film camera, the Red Epic X, in bulk. The camera incorporates a 5K sensor and a 27 layer ASIC processor which combine to give the camera the ability to shoot at up to 120 frames per second at a full 14-megapixel resolution. Although a digital camera, its resolution is so great that it exceeds the resolution of 35mm motion picture film.

As with all of Red’s cameras, it comes with the claim that it makes ‘obsolescence obsolete.’ To achieve this, the Epic X is built as a modular design, allowing a buyer to replace individual components that comprise the whole camera separately. As newer technology becomes available in one of the modules, a customer can purchase the new module to get a feature enhancement for the device.

All of this power and expandability comes at a price, with the Red Epic X selling for around $30,000 each.
