Samsung rumored taking control of MeeGo from Intel

updated 01:45 pm EDT, Mon September 5, 2011

Samsung may buy MeeGo according to leak

More uncertainty about MeeGo's fate has emerged at the start of the week as three separate sources maintained that Samsung was looking to take control of MeeGo. Intel had supposedly shifted much of its attention away, with Samsung looking to take the reins. The contacts for Netbook News didn't elaborate on when Samsung might make the leap.

Publicly, Intel has already denied a claim that it would freeze MeeGo altogether. The company said it would "remain committed" to its OS and help the community, but it didn't address questions of how active its work would be.

Even if it remains active, Intel's development of MeeGo remains in limbo. The OS suffered a major setback after Nokia mentioned plans to switch to Windows Phone and now will make very few MeeGo products. Aside from a few niche devices like a Acer tablet, most have opted for Android, Windows, or an in-house OS.

Samsung if it were to take over might not necessarily use the OS directly. It considers Bada its own self-developed OS and already supports Android and Windows Phone, leaving little room for a third choice. One option might be to integrate parts of MeeGo into Bada code. The company has all the same rejected webOS rumors and may not want to buy or manage platforms it doesn't think will survive.

    Bada Bing

Samsung buying MeeGo? Well, it's nice to have hobbies.

Just imagine if Samsung goes with Bing as its search engine for Bada: "Bada Bing." Should be a big hit in certain parts of New Jersey.

    ???

I wonder how electronista staff got their story about samsung, last week stories was about WebOS and Samsung, to which Samsung responded they were happy with Bada and they have no plan to focus on something else. Now this week the same rumors circus is starting again now about Meego. Do I have miss something this weekend about Samsung?

Beside, Meego is many many months if not years away of being ready for consumer product. Samsung got absolutely no interest into spending resources for developing a new platform, Samsung want a drop-in ready to use OS like Bada or Android for being able to sold their soul-less hardware
