Android Market top choice above all other apps

Consumer preference research house Nielsen has published findings from audience measurement data collected from Android smartphone users. The company found that Android Market was the top ranked app, followed by Google Maps, GMail, Facebook and Google Search. Nielsen also found that there were some gender differences with Google Maps having the second greatest reach for men after Android Market, while women preferred Facebook.

Nielsen collected data from metered Android smartphones. It measured the "active reach," the percentage of Android owners who used an app within the past 30 days, for each app. The company then created mobile media rankings for the top apps in aggregate. It also broke out the results by gender.

While many of the top 20 apps, showed similar rankings for both men and women, there were some notable differences social apps. Facebook reached 81 percent for women compared to 69 percent for men. Twitter also had slightly higher active reach among women, 16.5 percent, than men,13.4 percent. Google+ had more than twice the active reach among men, 15.8 percent, than women, 7.2 percent.

This is the first mobile media rankings to be published by Nielsen for Android smartphone usage. To collect the information, the company collected and analyzed the data from on-device meters on several thousand Android phones.
