Windows Server 8 developer preview detailed, out

After outlining the improvements to its Windows Server 8 software at the Build conference on Wednesday, Microsoft is now offering the developer preview for download. It relies heavy on the cloud and virtualization technology and gets 300 new features. Although not as aggressive as the home version of the OS, the new platform uses a Metro-style server manager and Windows Phone-like tiles.

The latest version of the task automation framework, PowerShell v3.0 is onboard, with more than 2,000 commands for easier scripting and managing of servers. Workflows can also be scripted for easier patching of multiple servers.

Hyper-V 3.0 with VHDX support is likewise present, with disk support up to 16TB, up from the current 2TB. Microsoft server and cloud corporate VP Bill Laing said users will now get high-end storage capabilities that needed specialized hardware before. These include device pooling, disk virtualization and thin provisioning.

Developers can now also use the same languages and tools to create on-premises and cloud apps. Work environments offer virtualization from anywhere, including branch locations and public connectivity services.

Microsoft hasn't given a release date for the new server edition, but they have historically come during or shortly after the regular releases when unveiled close to each other. [via WinRumors]
