Leak: Google Nexus Prime to hit GSM, Sprint's WiMAX too

updated 03:40 pm EDT, Sun September 18, 2011

Google Nexus Prime will still be world phone

A further Twitter clue from leaker Tom Fleming has hinted that the Google Nexus Prime will still aim for a global launch and more directly take on Apple once again. While only Verizon has its rumored November 3 date, the phone will still be available worldwide. The phone will be available with "GSM or WiMAX radios inside," implying that GSM carriers like AT&T or most Canadian providers as well as Sprint will be on tap.

Whether they would arrive simultaneously or face delays wasn't apparent. Last year, the Nexus S was only available for T-Mobile and a few European carriers at first before making their way to Sprint, AT&T, and Canadian carriers months later. With other networks involved from the start, it's implied Google might avoid the same mistake and make the Nexus Prime more readily available while its features are still relevant.

The Nexus Prime, possibly called the Droid Prime on Verizon, is expected to be the flagship for Android's Ice Cream Sandwich update and represent one of the more advanced phones on the market when it ships. Most rumors have characterized it as a cousin to the Galaxy S II LTE with a 4.5-inch screen and LTE 4G inside, though it may use a newer 1.5GHz TI OMAP processor and possibly a very high 720x1280 screen resolution. While unstated, it's presumed it will have any special features Google wants to show, starting with NFC and possibly more.

Whatever its features, the Nexus Prime is rumored good enough that Verizon dropped the Galaxy S II to get better competition for the iPhone 5.
