Apple to reset iCloud backups Sept. 22 ahead of iOS 5 gold

updated 10:05 pm EDT, Sun September 18, 2011

iCloud to go offline for Sept 22 for final release

Apple on its developer boards warned that it would reset iCloud backup data on September 22 in what's likely a clue as to the final iOS 5 release. Developers using iCloud during the beta won't have the option of backing up or restoring for an entire workday, between 9AM and 5PM Pacific that day. Any backups from before the reset won't work and will need a fresh backup.

The timing coincides with the day before iOS 5 is rumored to be reaching gold master, or completion, status. Apple would likely want all developers to be using the public version of iCloud by that stage.

Increasingly corroborated rumors have Apple going through a tight release schedule for iOS 5 and the iPhone 5. Apple may need carrier approvals for the gold release on October 5 and put it in stores as soon as two days later. Other parts of the iCloud strategy have also been winding up with a second Lion beta with iCloud built-in and late betas of iWork apps for iOS as well as the Apple TV. [via 9to5]

Anyone know if this applies to iCloud data (mail, calendars, contacts, old iDisk files)?

according to the originally quoted 9to5mac article:

" This reset doesn’t include data from mail, contacts, calendars, reminders, or bookmarks. "

As for iDisk, it is completely different and is not affected.
