Almost entire lineup waterproof

Japanese carrier KDDI has announced its winter lineup for the last quarter of 2012. The second largest wireless provider in Japan will be offering six Android phones, two feature phones and a new tablet. In a unique touch, most of these phones offer waterproof protection.

Early next month, KDDI will release the HTC EVO 3D. The Android-based 3D incorporates a dual-core 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor and an auto-stereoscopic 540x960, 4.3-inch 720p display, which can show 3D without glasses special glasses.

In Early October, KDDI will also be launching the Motorola Photon. The Photon has a similar look and feel as the EVO 3D. Also running Android, it packs a dual-core Tegra 2 1GHz processor, a 4.3-inch 540x960 screen, a rear eight-megapixel camera and a front VGA camera. It's already being carried in the US by Sprint.

Later in October, the carrier will be offering the Toshiba-Fujitsu F001. The main selling point of this waterproof smartphone is its 13-megapixel camera, with a camera ready-to-shoot time of only half a second. Previewing comes through the phone's 3.3-inch, 480x854 LCD display.

Also launching in late October is the Sony Ericsson Affare URBANO. The designer flip-phone offers a 3.3-inch VGA main display and a 1.1-inch sub-display. It also comes with an 8.1 megapixel camera.

In early November, KDDI will begin offering the Fujitsu Arrows Z, which integrates a dual core processor, a 4.3-inch 720p display, and a waterproof form factor. In mid-November, KDDI will also be shipping another waterproof phone, the Sharp Aquos Phone, which supports a 4.2-inch 540x960 LCD, a 1.4GHz Snapdragon processor, and an eight-megapixel camera.

In late November, KDDI will also be introducing the waterproof ASUS Tough tablet. Running Android 3.2, the seven-inch tablet integrates a 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core processor, a 1280x800 screen, a five-megapixel rear camera, and 16GB of storage.

In early December, the Kyocera Digno will hit KDDI's shelves. The phone will offer a four-inch 800x480 OLED screen, an eight megapixel camera, and is also waterproof.

KDDI's last offering of the year will be the NEC/Casio Medias BR. Available in late December, the entry-level waterproof Medias will provide a 3.6-inch 480x800 LCD, a 3.2-megapixel camera, and support for mobile wallet apps.

Not part of the winter lineup is the iPhone 5. KDDI is expected to eventually start selling the Apple smartphone, which is already being sold by competitor SoftBank, the third largest carrier in Japan, sometime in 2012. via TechCrunch]
