Cars 2 Appmates iPad game coming in October

Disney Mobile will soon launch a series of apps called Appmates that will turn Apple's iPad into a game board. The first is a rolling road that can be used in conjunction with toy cars from Disney/Pixar's Cars 2 blockbuster movie. The app requires special toys the iPad will recognize rolling across the screen, but the interface is touch-based, and there is no Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cables needed to play.

General manager of Disney Mobile, Bart Decrem, gave AllThingsD a demonstration of the game in action, which shows the game reacting to the car on the iPad's screen. Cars have skidded into mud, destroyed buildings and other obstacles and scared cows when blowing the horn. Driving by a mirror will even show a reflection of the car the gamer is holding. The game is aimed at boys at or near the age of six.

At first, players will have access to Lightning McQueen, Tow Mater, Finn McMissile, and Holley Shiftwell. Each car will have unique content in the game, such as one-liners and unique features. Hubcaps can be collected and then traded for upgrades like horns and headlights.

The toys and app are due to launch in the Apple Store and Disney Store on October 1. While the app will be free, a two-pack of the required compatible toys will cost $20. There is no indication yet of when other Appmates titles will arrive.
