Windows Phone 7.5 limiting hotspots to new phones

updated 04:20 pm EDT, Tue September 27, 2011

Windows Phone 7.5 update has hotspot feature

With the gradual release of Windows Phone 7.5 now rolling out, Microsoft's Ben Rudolph has outlined the new hotspot feature. The ability to share the phone's data connection with up to five other Wi-Fi devices will only be available on new Windows Phone 7.5 handsets as they need a radio that can broadcast the connection. Also, the provider has the final say whether the Internet Sharing option will be enabled.

So again, owners of current Windows Phone 7 handsets who update it to Windows Phone 7.5 won't have the option of using this tethering feature as a result of inadequate hardware. The Samsung Focus from AT&T, shown below, had the ability to turn on the hotspot feature back in the beta phase of Windows Phone 7.5. If the final, official operator update that goes live in the near future retains this capability remains to be seen. [via WinRumors]
