Fate of cheap Android tablet now unclear
India's alleged $35 tablet has been met with yet another production delay, leading some to doubt the entire project. Despite the repeated setbacks, Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal now claims the device will be launched next month. "This is not just a dream, it is a reality," he said at an event, according to quotes posted by The Times of India.
Sibal first announced the tablet last July, claiming the device would run Android and be geared for educational use. Features are said to include 2GB of RAM, a front-facing camera, a 32GB hard drive, USB ports, Wi-Fi and a range of apps for students.
After the July 2010 introduction, the government came back with a June 2011 announcement that the tablet would arrive before the end of the month. Three months later the minister now points to October 5 as a launch date, though it remains unclear if the endeavor will face additional delays or a price increase above the $35 promise.
