Apple readies for iOS 5 launch with iWork, iBooks

Apple has posted a pair of updates to key iOS 5 apps in preparation for its iPhone event next week. Those with access to the developer center can now get iWork for iOS beta 4. It's uncertain what changes have surfaced in the new build, although at this stage they will likely be limited to polish.

A quiet 1.3.1 update to iBooks (free, App Store) has also given clues as to Apple's readiness. Although described as only adding "important stability and performance improvements," iOS 5 beta testers tell Electronista that performance has improved significantly in the pre-release OS where little change is visible in iOS 4.

Both of the updates are coming just a day after iTunes 10.5 beta 9 and a new Lion 10.7.2 beta. They all point to Apple checking its major software components at least one more time before it introduces the next iPhone and has to integrate iTunes, the Mac, iOS apps, and iCloud together at virtually the same time.
