New low-cost iPhone 4 sighted in Foxconn's Brazil factory

Leak shows N90A iPhone 4 made in Brazil

Apple's mystery N90A iPhone 4, its budget model, has been spotted after an inside look at Foxconn's new Brazilian factory. The look by a Gizmodo insider showed front panels for a device that looks just like the the existing model. As shown in a quality assurance sheet, the samples were part of a defective batch that was hurt by lensing issues, possibly either for the camera section or in the process of making the panel itself.

Many expect the N90A to be the 8GB iPhone 4 that has been rumored in the past. As rumored, it might not be just the budget iPhone Apple has had since 2009 but a lower cost model designed to be more affordable in developing countries and those where plastic replaces glass to lower the total price. Apple may want more direct competition with the low-end Android phones prevalent in China.

With the discovery of the iPhone 4S or N94AP in iTunes code, it's now appearing more probable that Apple is planning a conservative update to the iPhone line where a frugal iPhone 4 and an internally upgraded iPhone 4S define the lineup. If separate, however, the differences don't explain the existence of cases for redesigned models being not just in abundance but being trusted enough to reach AT&T inventory.

Apple staff have supposedly said that the new cases are accurate and, by implication, that the N90A may be the only iPhone 4 to continue in the lineup. No evidence for a complete remake has surfaced outside of cases and description matches.

    It makes sense to me

iPhone 4s replaces the iPhone 4: it has a new radio (CDMA & GSM) so will need different firmware etc. To differentiate from the regular 4 it gets a new name. The iPhone 5 comes out as the new flagship model with all the new bells and whistles and the new shape. Seems simple and logical to me.

    Foxconn

Actually Foxconn already has a number of units operating in Brazil and producing especially for the local market plus a few export destinations (not only for Apple but other big makers, too) - the iPad production line/factory seems to be an issue, but iPhone production is already active.

    Hey! I thought that the

Brazilian plant was dead in the water after reading all those articles that Apple and Foxconn were in deep trouble due to corruption, highly unskilled workers and loss of tax breaks in Brazil. So what's this with a part coming from that factory? It's really difficult to judge who's telling the truth these days.

    Models

To me it's clear that the iPhone 5 will be the mainstay model going forward and that the iPhone 4S will inherit the place currently occupied by the 3GS. Apple sells a boatload of 3GSs but needs something that has a faster processor if the 5 is going to get the iPad's chip. The 4 had so much bad publicity at introduction for it's antenna and other issues that I think that Apple had to do a refresh (which also included it's antenna) to put those issues behind them.
