D700 replacement may surface later this month

The long awaited replacement for the Nikon D700 may actually be closing in on reality. Digital Camera info claims that the high-end 36.3-megapixel camera may be officially announced on October 26. The DSLR may be available in late November, still in time for holiday shopping.

In addition to a highly sensitive sensor, the camera will purportedly record video in 1080p at 30 frames per second. It could also offer 4FPS continuous shooting or 6FPS in DX (crop-frame) mode when augmented with an optional battery pack. It also will sport a headphone jack and a USB 3.0 interface, the sources said. There could be slots for both CF and SD media cards much like in the D300s.

The D700, which the new camera will replace, was launched back in July, 2008. At the time, its 12.1-megapixel capacity was leading edge. Since then, resolution has improved significantly to where even a very small interchangeable lens camera like the Sony NEX-7 can shoot at higher resolutoin.

Market pricing for the D800 is unofficially expected to be about 300,000 yen ($3,900 USD).
