Mobile cell tower helps peak LTE demand in Florida
Verizon has taken delivery of its first generator-powered mobile 4G LTE cell tower in Florida. The Cell-On-Wheels (COW) will be used to augment LTE performance in high demand situations such as major sporting events or in tourist areas during peak vacation weeks. The vehicle can also be driven to a location to guarantee LTE reception to first responders in response to an emergency, such as a hurricane or other crisis.
Verizon has already launched 4G LTE services in Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach, Tampa Bay, Orlando, Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Gainesville, Sarasota-Bradenton, Daytona Beach and Lakeland. Fort Myers will initiate the service later this month. It's not certain which areas are getting the COW systems first.
