Hong Kong student's Jobs graphic leads to merch, job offer

Actually dates back to Jobs' resignation

A graphic created by a 19-year-old student at Hong Kong's Polytechnic University School of Design, Jonathan Mak, is enjoying massive popularity, Reuters reports. The image is a take on the standard Apple corporate logo, but with the "bite" replaced by a silhouette of Steve Jobs' head. Reuters notes that following Jobs' death, the graphic has become so popular online that caps and t-shirts with it are being sold an eBay, and Mak himself has received a job offer.

In reality the altered logo was created after Jobs' resignation in August, but Mak says that it hadn't garnered much attention until he reposted it this week. "Originally, I was going to put a black modified logo against a white background," he adds. "It just didn't feel somber enough. I just wanted it to be a very quiet commemoration. It's just this quiet realization that Apple is now missing a piece. It's just kind of implying his absence."

I saw this logo being used on Al Jazeera Newshour as the graphic for this story. There are probably many others as well. I hope this guy is getting royalties for all the commercial use of his work.

    Re: royalties

There are enough substantial differences between this and the trademarked Apple logo to be considered original.
