Dell may be pausing Windows Phone, Android plans

Dell said axing Windows Phone sequel for now

Dell may be backing out of its plans for Windows Phone if not all of mobile for the near future. Claims passed on by a "higher up" alleged to WPCentral that a sequel to the Venue Pro, the Wrigley, has been cancelled along with any plans for Windows Phone 7 hardware in 2012. The smartphone might not have even gone beyond planning.

The Texan firm might be holding off until at least Windows Phone 8, which might not show until at least late 2012.

Dell might be freezing some of its overall Android efforts as support for existing phones like the Aero and Venue is ramping down. One known new Android phone is coming the Streak Pro 101DL, although it's so far limited to Japan.

The behind-the-scenes strategy hasn't been confirmed. Dell has claimed that it has a positive view of Windows Phone, but it was conspicuously absent from any mention as a Windows Phone 7 Mango (now 7.5) device partner. It may be refocusing its efforts after a slew of glitches led to widespread criticism of the Venue Pro, even if the device itself was well received.

Dell, like HP, has had trouble gaining credibility in the mobile space, both in phones and tablets. Issues with timely updates, quality, and competitive features have largely kept it out of the market. Apple is so far the only computer builder to have achieved any real success in branching out.

    WP7 = DOA

    WP7 is OK as a 2007 phone offering - but this is 2011, almost 2012.

    Yes, it's called Windows 7 because

    It was three or four years behind. Windows 8? 2008, but it's going to be 2012 already.

    Dell would be wise to give

    up on Android smartphones and tablets. The smartphone and tablet markets are already saturated with various Android stuff and there's very little profit to be made. Go with WP7 which seems to be relatively uncrowded space.

    Sell the company to Lenovo

    HP is getting out of the PC and mobile businesses.
    Maybe Dell should too.
