Apple starts taking iPhone 4S preorders

updated 03:00 am EDT, Fri October 7, 2011

iPhone 4S preorders open worldwide

On cue, the online Apple Store and numerous carriers including AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon have begun taking online preorders for the iPhone 4S. The picks include carrier-locked models as well as the full-price but unlocked GSM versions for those who want to switch carriers or avoid early cancellation fees.

In the US, prices range from $199 for a locked 16GB model through to $849 for an unlocked or contract-free 64GB edition. International prices vary more widely but can go to as little as free on contract.

Apple is promising that orders should usually arrive by October 14. When online preorders have been options, the company been known to occasionally ship devices a day early.

Update: some stores went live immediately with the option, while others were unavailable for the first several minutes.

    Yeah, not quite

Store has been down and still is down in multiple browsers, clearing cookies and with Apple's iPhone app. Not wanting to try cell phone sites.

Feels like a BoC on Woot!

Been watching the "We'll be back soon" note for the last half an hour. Got a little excitement when the http service crashed, but then right back to the note.

    This is ridiculous

Seriously, haven't these sorts of issues plagued every one of these launches? They always site unprecedented demand, but at some point, I have to place the blame on poor planning. This is the 5th such launch debacle.
