Windows Phone to catch up with dual-core, LTE; leap others

Microsoft vows faster Windows Phone hardware

Microsoft is planning to move Windows Phone's to modern hardware features like dual-core processors and LTE 4G once the timing's right, the company mobile head Andy Lees said in a discussion Monday. While Android and now the iPhone were already dual core, Lees told AllThingsD that Windows Phone will be getting the option once the code is optimized to use the extra cores. It wasn't as much of a concern given that Windows Phone's design is inherently lean and helps it run faster.

"They’re all single core, but I suspect that they will be faster in usage than any dual-core phone that you put against it, and that’s the point," he said.

On LTE, Lees took the same approach to resisting the first wave of design as Apple, which said it would have to make design sacrifices to get the 4G technology early on. They were coming, but he wanted a "far more efficient" design that didn't require an extra-large design or an extraordinary battery to get reasonable battery life. He was likely alluding to waiting for Snapdragon S4 chips and its relatives, which will have LTE built into the chip package and use much less power.

While the upgrades will see Microsoft just catching up, the manager saw Microsoft as focusing on upgrades that would let it "leapfrog," much as it went from a trailing browser to one of the better browsers in one generation.

He wouldn't acknowledge the upcoming Tango update playing a role in the company's strategy but did acknowledge that there had to be a balance between minor and major updates. Too many iterations limited the chances for major updates, but a company in Microsoft's outsider position couldn't afford to leave long intervals between monolithic updates.

    Here you go again...

iPhone event replays. Playing catching up while the hardware is barely sell, in business world, this doesn't make any sense.

    These Microsoft guys...

...are delusional. By the time they get dual cores, Apple's chip will have four. The time is now, MS! I'll believe it when I see them "leapfrog" the competition. Just getting in the game would be an improvement.

Even with the same number of cores...

what's the use if it operates slower and kills the battery in half the time?

    By Leapfrong you mean what?

"Microsoft as focusing on upgrades that would let it "leapfrog," much as it went from a trailing browser to one of the better browsers in one generation."
Uh, no, if it had leapforgged it would have produced the best browser. Just getting to be "one of the better" is just catching up to the middle of the pack. If you are going to leapfrog, you have to jump the pack and get in front.

All the hardware in the world....

Hardware is only what you make of it with the "software". It is the software that makes or breaks a device.
