Google may want Akamai to strengthen YouTube

Google may be launching a bid to acquire Internet content delivery network provider Akamai. SAI reports rumors from multiple sources that Google, following on its proposed acquisition of Motorola, is now on the prowl to buy an ad technology company. The name that most often crops up in the minds of many industry pundits is content delivery giant Akamai.

Akamai, by virtue of where its servers sit on the Internet and how it delivers distributed content, is well positioned to know what, when, and how people are watching or viewing content. Google could use that information to improve many aspects of its business including search, video, and display.

A second incentive is Akamai's possible bargan value after seeing its stock valuation drop by over 50 percent over the past year. A third motivator has to do with Google's ambition to turn YouTube into an alternative to cable TV. Akamai's technology would be a very efficient tool for pushing the video content out to viewers, who could be watching hundreds of thousands or millions of live video streams.

Akamai insiders reportedly claim there is no substance to the acquisition rumors, although their position at the company might limit their access to the most secretive details.

    Another day another Google aquisition

I wonder how long before Google becomes like Microsoft and is too big, too beauracratic and too slow to adapt to market changes.

Me thinks a couple of years from now.
