US iPhone 4S launch met with long lineups

Built-up demand draws crowds
The launch of the iPhone 4S so far appears to be drawing major crowds in the US. At the company's flagship Fifth Avenue store in New York City, the lineup reportedly stretched around two sides of the block. While last year's iPhone 4's lineup is said to have wrapped around four sides, rain is thought to be keeping some 4S buyers at home for the time being.
At the high-profile Domain Apple Store in Austin, Texas, many dozens of people were spotted waiting in line in sunny if unusually brisk weather. As with other lineups around North America, a number of future 4S buyers passed the time on iPads and MacBooks. The lineup extended around several other buildings well into a parking lot, suggesting plenty of demand.
Interest in the iPhone 4S is likely being piqued for two reasons. The first is an unusually long wait, since instead of launching roughly 12 months after the last device as per usual, the 4S is arriving an additional four months later. The 4S will also be the first iPhone available through Sprint. Unlike AT&T and Verizon, Sprint is holding firm to unlimited data plans.

It's tough to get revved up about what is obviously an interim model.
