Multi-sport monitor hits FCC

GPS maker Magellan has submitted a new device to the FCC which indicates it's near entering the fitness market. The Switch Up is a multi-sport device that can monitor effort, track movement, and calculate performance parameters. It also comes with conventional GPS tracking.

The device appears to have several operational modes, including, timekeeping, fitness, and GPS mapping. Among the attributes the Switch Up monitors, it can track distance covered, and use an ANT+ interface to record cadence or RPMs as well as monitor heart rate. It can also pace the user.

Magellan follows in the footsteps of other GPS manufacturers, including Garmin, which has expanded its reach into the sports and fitness arena. Magellan has not given clues as to when it would ship. [via GPS tracklog]
