Moto Spyder confirmed as Droid RAZR

Motorola through the teaser page for its October 18 event has unintentionally confirmed that it's launching the Droid RAZR (Spyder). A dig through the resources has shown the full design, including its thin frame and its carbon fiber-like (possibly kevlar) back. A look at the back also verifies that it will have LTE-based 4G when it reaches Verizon.

The smartphone is an unusual second flagship Motorola smartphone for Verizon in as many months. Apart from its namesake thinness, it should mostly be a mild feature upgrade with a faster 1.2GHz processor and possibly a Super AMOLED screen instead of an LCD. It should still have an eight-megapixel camera with 1080p video and run Android 2.3 with Motorola's custom Blur layer.

With a launch likely due within a few weeks at most, the Droid RAZR may end up replacing the Bionic in practice, if not necessarily on principle. The Bionic was delayed by half a year after technical hurdles and feedback forced a complete redesign.

A decision to revive the RAZR name may reflect Motorola's struggle to compete not just with the iPhone on Verizon but with HTC, Samsung and others that have started to overshadow it on the network. Motorola was at one point Verizon's savior by giving it the original Droid and its first real alternative to the iPhone. Going back to its most famous modern phone, from 2004, could help get it recognition from those who still remember. [via Droid-Life]
