Microsoft stores give free Windows Phones for spending $499

updated 03:50 pm EDT, Wed October 19, 2011

In-store only promotion ends October 31

Microsoft is running a by-one-get-phone-free promotion to get buyers into one of its 14 Microsoft Stores to buy a computer or gaming console. If a customer spends $499 or more, they can also pick up a free Windows phone. The deal is not tied to a specific wireless carrier.

Eligible phones appear to be mostly first generation Windows Phone handsets including the HTC Surround, LG Quantum, HTC HD7 and Dell Venue Pro.

Microsoft may be timing the promotion to help draw customers into its newest retail outlet which is scheduled to open tomorrow in its home state of Washington. Microsoft officially describes its stores as retail "experiments" but is often thought to be hoping they will serve as countering messages to Apple's highly successful Apple Stores.

The deal is only available in-store at a Microsoft Store location now through October 28. [via wpcentral]
