RIM confirms Porsche BlackBerry 9980 is real

The mysterious Porsche Design-created BlackBerry has been confirmed by an invite sent to the media. The BlackBerry 9980, sometimes called the Knight, will be unveiled at an October 27 event in Dubai that Stuff and others will attend. Details were short in the invoite, but it would be an "exclusive collaboration," the invite read.

The 9980 should be an adaptation of the Bold 9900 with a highly angular, stylized metal and glass look. As a result, it should share the same 2.44-inch, 640x480 display, 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, five-megapixel fixed-focus camera, and 8GB of storage.

Whether or not the smartphone will get any Porsche-specific apps or features isn't known. Also unknown is the release date, although the 9980 will likely carry a premium as a luxury phone targeted at the UAE and other countries where the BlackBerry is considered an especially hot device.
