Sony Ericsson to update 2011 Xperia devices to ICS

Sony Ericsson has announced that it will introduce software upgrades for its current range of Xperia handsets. The company has said that Android 4.0 will be developed for its 2011 smartphone line, although was not prepared to enter into official timeframes. The information first came to light in a post on the company’s official Holland blog.

The company revealed that all its smartphones introduced this year are also on the verge of receiving an update to Android 2.3.4 (Gingerbread). The next update the handsets will receive will be in 2012 when Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) updates are made available.

Sony Ericsson issued this statement on the matter:

“Sony Ericsson is currently rolling out the upgrade to Gingerbread 2.3.4 across its entire 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio. This software upgrade will be available through a phased roll out in select markets. Beyond Gingerbread 2.3.4, we plan to upgrade our 2011 Xperia smartphone portfolio to the next Android platform made available to us.”

Prior to 2011, Sony Ericsson had been roundly criticized for either failing to update their Android phones, or taking an extensive amount of time to do so. The company officially acknowledged this and approached Gingerbread differently. Instead of customizing the OS too deeply, as it had in the past, the Sony UI features were made available largely as widgets. [via Engadget]
