Toshiba tablet LCD hits 498 pixels per inch
Toshiba Mobile Display on Thursday showed a possible record-setting 6.1-inch LCD likely destined for tablets and possibly more mobile devices. Despite its size, it has the same 2560x1600 resolution as older 30-inch displays, giving it an extremely high density of 498 pixels per inch. At this resolution, it's "photographic quality," Toshiba said, and adds a sense of depth even in 2D.
The resolution is about four times denser than the 132 pixels per inch of an iPad and twice as much as resolutions that aren't even on the market.
The screen still manages a 1000:1 contrast ratio and wide 176-degree viewing angles. Its color accuracy at 61 percent of the NTSC color range isn't as good as in desktop displays but is relatively strong for mobile. A 3D version is an option.
Toshiba didn't mention any customers, including itself, but it signaled that the LCD technique was designed not just with tablets in mind but also smartphones and other mobile hardware. The breakthrough could potentially be cut down in resolution and size to fit on a phone while still keeping the ultra-dense output.
Multiple rumors have persisted that Apple was investing in Toshiba LCDs and might want more, higher resolution screens for its next-generation mobile devices.

Silly for an aging market
This level of resolution seems silly for a market of aging consumers. If your eyesight isn't 20/20 or better then what's the point of 498 ppi?
