ARM reports strong growth year over year

UK-based ARM Holdings has reported record third quarter earnings. Its Cortex A8 and A9 reference designs currently dominate the smartphone market and are in use by Android manufacturers and Apple in its iPhone, iPad and iPod touch lines. Its third quarter revenue doubled from £14.8 million in 2010 to £31.5 million in 2011.

Its total revenue for the last financial quarter ending September 30 rose from £158 million to £192.3 million, which represents a 22 percent increase year over year.

ARM’s chief executive Warren East said that the results reflected a "continued high level of design activity, with many new customers licensing ARM technology for the first time, driven by end-market requirements for smarter, low-power chips."

Underscoring East’s comments were the shipment figures of mobile chips featuring ARM’s designs. In the last quarter alone, ARM-based chips shipped over one billion units. This represents an increase of around ten percent over the same period in 2010.

The company forecasts licensing revenue in the order of $763 million by the end of 2011. [via Engadget]
