BlackBerry 7.1 update may be end to pre-BBX line

More positive rumors emerged for RIM on Tuesday. A source told BGR that BlackBerry 7.1 would be arriving before the end of the year with unknown but "major" additions. The OS could be the swan song for the current BlackBerry platform before BBX arrives in 2012.

The Bold 9790 may be 7.1's inaugural device and now appears to have some design changes. To adapt to the smaller size over the 9900, the new Bold would get the same island-like buttons of the Torch 9860. It's expected to be a late entry, arriving at the end of November.

RIM's reasons for the 9790 aren't known, and it's expected to be very close to the 9900 other than the smaller 2.45-inch screen. Both have 640x480 touchscreens and 8GB of storage. The device might be less expensive or an option for carriers that won't get the 9900.
