Nokia poaches webOS developer head Richard Kerris

updated 11:30 am EDT, Thu October 27, 2011

Richard Kerris now known leaving HP for Nokia

The company behind webOS developer relations VP Richard Kerris leaving HP has been identified on Thursday as Nokia. The firm's senior VP for Developer and Marketplace, Marco Argenti, confirmed that Kerris had jumped ship to become Nokia's Global Head of Developer Relations. His exact role wasn't outlined, although his focus will likely be on getting support for Nokia-specific Windows Phone apps.

Kerris had only been at HP for nine months but has had a reputation for working at some of the biggest companies in the San Francisco Bay Area. Among these have included Alias|Wavefront, Apple, and Lucasfilm.

The hire shows a renewed commitment at Nokia to making itself a desirable target for developers after years of letting developers shift to the iPhone and later Android. Its Lumia phones and future Windows Phones both give Nokia much more up-to-date hardware and software but also show a shift towards the US, which most consider the hotbed of development. Much of Nokia's Windows Phone work has been done in Sunnyvale, California, a location closer to where it's likely to find mobile app developers.

HP still hasn't said who if anyone would replace Kerris, but it serves as a blow to a webOS team that has been denied hardware and has an uncertain future for its software. [via WPCentral]
