Will be given to developers committed to platform

Nokia and Microsoft have used the Nokia World conference now going on in London to launch a program to encourage developers to write apps for Windows Phone devices. The two have combined forces to offer Nokia Lumia 800 Windows Phones to developers who are committed to writing apps for the Microsoft platform. Starting today, they hope to provide 25,000 such phones to developers.

The Lumia 800, aka Sea Ray, was just officially unveiled by Nokia yesterday. It features a Snapdragon 1.4GHz single-core processor, a 3.7-inch AMOLED display, and an 8-megapixel Carl Zeiss camera. Packaged with the phone is 25GB of free cloud storage on Microsoft's online SkyDrive.

The outreach to developers is part of the companies' “Smarter Way to App” campaign launched last month. Microsoft and Nokia hope to attract 100,000 developers between now and June by hosting 1,000 joint events. These include code camps, hackathons, and other kinds of hands-on affairs. The ultimate goal is to make Windows Phones more attractive to potential users by closing the gap in applications available as compared to Android and Apple iOS devices. [via ZDnet]

That's their sales done for the year

now that the girlie (what pretty colours they match my lipstick) phones are out, with 1.6% of the market, that's below 2%, not 16%, but 1.6%, Microcopy's B***** Nokia really expects to get 12% in a short time frame. Have they been smoking the illegal stuff again? I find NokiSoft's tiles, toy like, takes up the whole screen with just 8 icons. But they are not real icons, are they? Not even photorealistic icons, the usual poor quality stuff from Microcopy. I must admit they seem to be trying real hard on the developer side, sounds like they mean business. But I think it's too late, probably about 4 years too late. I believe Apple have about 450,000 apps, Android about 300,000. Not sure how many Nokisoft have, but lets says 50,000. Even if the developers make 100,000 per year, they are still 4 years behind. And that's assuming Apple and Android developers stop in their tracks in making any more. Apple will launch iPad 3 in March 2012, keeping the iPad 2 and reducing its price, leaving a range of iPads, iPhone 5 may be out by July 2012, with a range of iPhones, killer strategy, killer products. I think Apple is likely to own the tablet market (90%), the smartphone market 55/30 in Androids favour, NokiSoft less than 5%, RIM 10%. 2012 will be a very interesting year. A very poor one for NokiSoft.
