HP refutes rumors of webOS shutdown: 'phenomenal talent'

HP PSG head says webOS group very much alive

HP's Personal Systems Group head Todd Bradley in an interview (auto-playing video below) shot down rumors the company would end its webOS division entirely. The executive told Bloomberg it was an "unfounded rumor" and that the company was swinging its evaluation to the OS after deciding to keep PCs. There was "phenomenal software and phenomenal talent" that just needed to be put to the right purposes, he said.

What that involved wasn't mentioned. HP has so far ruled out a return to webOS mobile hardware. Previously, HP has talked of dual-booting PCs with webOS and putting into printers and other embedded devices.

The PC veteran hasn't entirely ruled out the prospects of selling off the division. Most companies rumored to be considering buying webOS have either declined any comment or actively refuted it. Sony Ericsson has left the possibility open to help give it an alternative to Android.

The platform was once supposed to be the direct rival to the iPhone and launched with fanfare through the Palm Pre. Build quality and difficulty competing in pure features let Apple and later Google keep the lead. [via SAI]

    HP has joined

HP has joined NixFlip (aka NetFlix).

HP has no credibility. Just read on HP's website:

Q: Do you have any HP TouchPad inventory available for sale?

A: We do not currently have any inventory available and are working to try and make more available as soon as possible. We cannot guarantee that more will be available.

What kind of commitment is that? Someone should be committed.

    @ Paul Huang

Sounds like they've failed to update their web page (an issue into and of itself) but I got e-mail from them yesterday after having been on the "wait list" for a WebOS pad and it told me their stock is exhausted and not to be replenished. They are apparently giving a pad away with a computer purchase @ BestBuy. For $99 it was a bargain, flawed as it may be, but getting it for free is no bargain if one is forced to buy one of their horrible horrible PCs.

    Translation

"Whoops, we just discovered that we have contractual obligations to deliver at least one 'finished' version of WebOS, and the penalties are greater than the cost of the salaries of the dev team. Rest assured we're going to spin it off or cancel it the minute our lawyers see daylight."
