Milestone reached in less than 3 years
Novatel Wireless has announced that it has shipped more than 3 million MiFi routers throughout the globe. The milestone was reached less than three years since the first MiFi devices arrived on the market. As part of an announcement celebrating the achievement, the company notes that it now holds 35 patents and 37 patent applications related to its line of portable routers.
It is unclear if the company's recent sales have decelerated as the standalone devices compete with built-in hotspot functionality available on most smartphones. Although enabling Wi-Fi router functionality on handsets typically brings an extra fee from the carriers, the additional charges are usually less than the cost of a separate plan for a standalone router.
"We are very proud of the support for our MiFi family of products and will continue to focus on innovation that has made the brand what it is today," said Novatel CMO Rob Hadley.
