First LTE smartphones expected in mid 2012

Cricket CEO Doug Hutcheson has proclaimed that the company is preparing to begin its LTE network deployment. In a conference call outlining quarterly financial information, he noted that the company is ready to launch its first LTE trial market "shortly."

"The introduction of LTE is now an increase in priority for the business, and I'm pleased to report we're on track," the executive said.

The company plans to bring LTE to 25 millon potential customers by the end of 2012. The coverage will continue to expand to two-thirds of the current footprint by the next two to three years.

The first test markets to receive Cricket LTE have yet to be announced, however the carrier is expected to unveil its first LTE-equipped smartphones sometime in the middle of 2012. [via DSLReports]
