comScore Sept 2011 shows iPhone up despite Android

Even with Android still on the rise, Apple now represents a tenth of all US cellphones, comScore found on Friday. Android hit a new high of 44.8 percent in smartphones in September, but Apple as an individual cellphone maker crossed the 10 percent mark for the first time to hit 10.2 percent. Among smartphones, Apple was still up at 27.4 percent.

All of Google's increase, as before, was coming at the expense of all other smartphone platforms. RIM has lost nearly five points in three months, moving down to 18.9 percent, while Microsoft dropped just slightly to a new low of 5.6 percent. Nokia's Symbian was down to 1.8 percent.

Among all cellphone makers, Apple's gains were coming both from RIM, down to 7.1 percent, and equal 0.7-point losses from LG and Motorola as their basic feature phone businesses faded away. Samsung was still at the top but appeared to have hit a plateau after having gone unchanged at 25.3 percent.

The results still show that most Android users are those who are dropping one of the oldest smartphone platforms, such as BlackBerry and Windows Mobile, rather than jumping from Apple. October results are also likely to shift wildly as the iPhone 4S launch rush is factored in. Apple's expansion to Sprint and the first instance of a $99 iPhone on CDMA networks could also make for wildcards, not just by reaching a new segment but possibly taking away from sales that might have otherwise gone to cheaper Android phones.
