Eye-C app lets Android stream through Apple's AirPlay

Free app moves AirPlay beyond Apple devices

Eyecon Resources has launched Eye-C (free, Android Market), an Android media player app. The app normally supports playing music back to any device that supports DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance). In a rarity, however, it also has the option of sending music to systems that use AirPlay, Apple's in-house media streaming method.

While it's possible to reverse-engineer AirPlay, it's unusual to see an app both on Android and published to Google's official store, where it's more vulnerable to takedown requests. Apple hasn't commented on or otherwise reacted to Eye-C.

The app lets users create shareable "Taglists" out of music, photos, and videos on SoundCloud, YouTube, Picasa, Facebook, personal music libraries and even Android phones. The music can then be played on the phone or streamed to AV receivers from Pioneer, Denon, Yamaha, and Sony, connected TVs from Samsung, LG, and Panasonic, as well as set-top boxes and game consoles like the Xbox 360.

An iOS version is also available for iPad and iPhone owners (free, App Store).

Android is gradually getting its own rough equivalent in Android@Home, although there aren't any known devices that support it so far. [via Gizmodo]
